GreenCoat® - surface treatment environment

The most environmentally friendly colour coated steel in the market. With bio-based coating made from Swedish rapeseed oil. Steadily moving towards 100% fossil-free production. Colourfast - and tested against UV radiation. Documented durability - also against corrosion.

Minimal environmental impact

For sustainable building materials, the life cycle perspective is more important than ever. In their "Environmental Product Declaration", GreenCoat® documents why this unique, patented solution from SSAB significantly reduces the environmental impact, making the product the market's greenest product for both roofs and facades.

Steel is one of the few materials that is 100% circular. This means that the material can be efficiently used again and again without loss of properties or performance - and without creating hazardous waste. Steel is easy to recycle and emits less CO2 during production than other general building materials such as aluminium.

Fossil-free steel with GreenCoat

HYBRIT - Fossil-free steel

The production of GreenCoat® is undertaken in as sustainable a manner as possible at SSAB in Sweden - and the methods are constantly being developed further. It is an overriding goal that all production of SSAB must be fossil-free by 2045.

HYBRIT a project in which SSAB strives to replace the caking coal traditionally used for ore-based steel production with hydrogen. The goal is to create the world's first fossil-free technology for steel production, virtually without CO2 emissions. As a result, the by-product of the steel production therefore becomes water instead of CO2. With HYBRIT technology, SSAB aims to be the first steel company in the world to bring fossil-free steel to the market already in 2026.

Already today, SSAB's blast furnaces emit 7 % less CO2 than the EU average. As mentioned the goal of the HYBRIT technology initiative is that we eliminate virtually all CO2 emissions from the steel production.

The story of GreenCoat®

It all started in 2002 - as an idea that has now become very important for the environmental changes faced by the construction industry. SSAB has been manufacturing colour coated steels for the building industry for more than 50 years and was aiming to develop better colour coated steel products by using natural resources with environmental benefits and an even better performance and durability. GreenCoat® became a reality after 10 years of development and outdoor testing, six professional assessments, one PhD thesis and more than ten presentations at conferences and a worldwide patent.

DS Stålprofil is the only GreenCoat®-certified partner in Denmark.
