A North Jutland harbour story made of steel profiles and ship anchors
Where Aalborg meets the Limfjord – and where the city meets the saltwater – you’ll find an office building where wood meets black steel profiles. The building is part of Denmark’s largest inland port, Port of Aalborg, which welcomed no fewer than 901 ships in 2024. Ships arriving in Aalborg set out from all over the world, and whether it’s a cruise liner from Bergen, a container ship from Barbados or a general cargo vessel from Belgium, this building stands to meet ships from every corner of the globe.
At an international port, the schedule is tight, and the days are busy. With ships from all over the world, everyday life is filled with a whole spectrum of colours and impressions. The clean, streamlined design in DS Nordic Click Seam 475 gives the headquarters a calm yet robust appearance. The steel profiles are joined by a ‘first officer’ in the form of wooden panelling – its light tone offers a well-integrated contrast to the black finish of the DS Nordic Click Seam.
We often see our steel profiles in a kind of “design collaboration” with wood – particularly in projects using DS Nordic Click Seam. According to the Danish Architecture Center, today’s architectural style is characterised by sharp lines, geometric shapes and the combination of different materials. That matches well with the kinds of projects where our steel profiles are combined with timber and other materials to create a harmonious design.
Hurricanes are no match for steel profiles
Located close to the water and facing ships from all seven seas, DS Nordic Click Seam 475 is a durable choice. The steel profiles feature an exceptionally strong side overlap, making them capable of withstanding wind speeds of up to hurricane force. When a container ship docks at Port of Aalborg after crossing the Atlantic, the crew is met by a facade that stands its ground – even when Neptune is raging. The profiles have been tested at the Danish Technological Institute, which has verified their resistance to wind speeds of up to 50 m/s.
