Old building gets a new “shell” in Dalum Paper Mill

In the new district of Dalum Paper Mill in Odense, a distinctive building stands as a symbol of the area’s transformation – from a bustling industrial hall to an open and vibrant community centre. Here, where Dalum Paper Mill once produced paper for the entire country, C.F. Møller Architects have breathed new life into the historic walls. The result is an atmospheric activity house that serves as a social gathering point for residents, where past and present meet in elegant harmony.

The building, which once housed the factory’s first paper machine PM1, had become heavily worn after many years of use. Today, it features carefully renovated brick walls and a new structure that both stabilises and protects the historic work. Large openings facing south invite natural light inside, creating a natural connection between the internal community and the surrounding urban space.

For the new roof, the architect chose our DS Rib Sheets 22-270 with design grooves in the colour Acorn Brown and a matte finish. The characteristic steel cladding gives the building a contemporary and robust “shell” that harmonises beautifully with the original brick facade. The combination of the warm brown steel and the raw masonry highlight the building’s industrial soul and creates a striking contrast between old and new.
